Will's (Mackensie Astin) plans to go to college are thrown into disarray when his father is killed in a freak sledding accident on his farm in wintry North America. Forced to take over the reins of the family business, he enters a cross country dog race, lured by the top prize of $100,000. However, trouble arises due to his involvement with an unscrupulous newspaper proprietor, who pays the registration fee for the contest and thereby believes to have a hold over the young man. Will finds help from an unlikely quarter - Gus, the pack dog he blames for his father's death.
