General notes:
Leslie Freeman (1932-2000) was born at Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, and moved to Madrid Road, Barnes in 1938. He was a local historian and a long-term member of the Barnes and Mortlake History Society, joining in 1971 and being elected to the committee in 1974, he was Chairman between 1981 and 1991, and he became Vice-President in 2000. He wrote articles, staged exhibitions and gave talks for the Society. He also worked as the Society's archivist and Newsletter editor. He made a large photographic record. In addition to this he was a bell-ringer at St. Mary's Church, Barnes and later St. Mary's Church, Mortlake, where he was Captain of the Tower. He wrote 'Going to the Parish', a history of St. Mary's Church, Mortlake. He died of Motor Neurone Disease and was buried at St. Mary's, Mortlake, where the bells were muffled for the service.
