Music and technology : a very short introduction
Katz, Mark, 1970-2022
eBook
Abstract: This Very Short Introduction takes an expansive and inclusive approach meant to broaden and challenge our traditional understanding of music and technology. In its most common use, "music technology" tends to evoke images of twentieth- and twenty-first-century electronic devices. This volume treats all tools used to create, store, reproduce, and transmit music-new or old, electronic or not-as technologies. In this view, technology in music encompasses instruments, whether acoustic, electric, or electronic; notation and printing; sound recording and playback; broadcasting; digital production software and streaming platforms, and much more. Technology has been integral to every aspect of musical activity as long as humans have made music. If we want to understand how music is made and experienced, if we want to know how music travels and how it gains meaning, we must investigate its relationship-ancient and inextricable-with technology.
