Winner of an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1975, Akira Kurosawa's film is based on the turn of the century journals of Arseniev, a Tsarist officer. Filmed in 70mm, the film documents scientist Arseniev's (Yuri Solomin) meeting and subsequent relationship with an ageing gold hunter and forest dweller Dersu (Maxim Munzuk), who lives at peace in the wild taiga. Dersu acts as Arseniev's guide, saving his life on more than one occasion through his knowledge of nature.
