The Battle of Waterloo brought to an end two decades of war in Europe. It had been a draining conflict financially and in terms of human life, and had threatened the very sovereignty of numerous nations. The tale of the battle has been told many times, but usually in terms of the political and military situation, debates over strategies, tactics and so on. The accounts come from letters, diaries and contemporary newspaper reports: the eyewitness testimonies of officers and ordinary soldiers, friend and foe. This is how it felt to be there.
